The fourth beast of Daniel chapter 7, which was pagan Rome and eventually papal Rome.
Daniel 8:12 is key to help us to understand what Satan was able to do through this kingdom. Revelation 1:7 Interestingly, during the dark ages, Rome was an engine of prosperity. How?
Rome was so identified by early reformers, before Martin Luther. There was Calvin, Hus, Zwingli, Wycliffe, Bishop Meaux of France, they knew that the power of Rome fits into bible prophecy of the fourth beast of Daniel, the system of the Antichrist.
In order to get the focus away from pagan Rome, which was metamorphosing from 476 to 538 from pagan Rome into papal Rome, which is what we have today.
The church needed to get the eyes of the people away from calling them the Antichrist, so they got the Jesuit Spanish theologian from Salamanca, Francisco Ribiera, who in 1585, wrote a commentary called Futuristic Eschatology, in which he coined the term “preterism”, meaning, the prophesies have already been fulfilled. Ribiera took Daniel 7, where it mentions the 70 weeks/days prophecy. (expand) With Darius and Cyrus it never gets fulfilled. But by the time of the reign of King Artaxerxes, the whole prophecy about the Christ and His ministry is fulfilled. We call this the first Advent; (expand)
The powers of Rome knew that preterism would not hold, because the reformers had already figured them out.
So Ribiera took the 70 weeks of Daniel, the last week all pointing to the anointing of Christ, His baptism, and in the middle of the week, His crucifixion, and in the last 3 ½ years, the gospel was going to the gentiles. That 7 week period all points to Christ. But Ribiera reinterpreted that prophecy and made that last 7 year point to the Antichrist.
Who called it “dispensationalism”? Manuel Lacunza under the pen name “Manuel Jehosafat Ben-Ezra, a converted Jew.” The Papal church said they believe there is going to be an Antichrist, but he is going to come way down in the future. When he comes, he is going to make a decree with the Jews and they are going to be converted and preach the gospel to the world, but they are going to do that after the church is raptured. And this is when they say the 7 year period is going to begin.
Revelation 4:1 this the text they point to claiming that this where the rapture took place. But the context of this is simply John being caught up in vision, and God saying to John come up here to see things in Heaven.

Saint Roberto Bellarmine, Italian Jesuit, was another contributor to the counter-reformation, who embraced Ribiera’s shaky theory, but it started to die out.
The Archbishop of Canterbury in 1593, who was the Keeper of the Manuscripts in Lambeth Palace, started to study it, and first coined the phrase “Gap Theory”, meaning that this explains the gap of the 70 week prophecy.
Manuel Lacunza – a Jesuit priest from Chile who secretly published under the fictitious name “Manuel Jehosafat Ben-Ezra, a converted Jew” He first coined the term “dispensationalism”. Claiming his Jewish roots.
Prior to 1830 there was no discussion of this rapture.
Reverend Edward Irving – was excommunicated from the Presbyterian church. He knew Spanish and translated Emmanuel Lacunza’s book into English and was pubished in London. Church of Scotland 1832 called it “pretribulation”.
Adventists believe in post-tribulation, premillennialism. That Jesus will return before the 1,000 years. (expand)
Margaret McDonald a teenager in Scotland, embraced Irving’s teaching. She claimed to have visions in 1830 confirming the rapture and speaking in tongues. John Nelson Darby called speaking in tongues “devilish” and minimized Irving’s influence.
Cyrus I Schofield, an American (bio) in 1843. In 1909 wrote the Reference Bible was a pastor’s study bible with margin notes.
Harold (Hal) Lyndsay,(bio) took it to a whole new level with his now discredited and debunked, best-selling book The Late Great Planet Earth.
